Those to Come

Nayru could see that logic. It could be hard to figure out what one was thinking, this was true. Yet with patience and practice it would come easier to the girl, if she truly wished to be so cunning and clever. Still Nayru knew others were entitled to their private thoughts and perhaps one day little Eclipse would learn this too. Even if Nayru did stumble upon knowledge that did not belong to her, she never divulged it and mostly kept it to herself, stored up for later reference even if nothing ever came of it. Not all secrets had to be shared, and until Eclipse learned that Nayru hope the girl didn’t learn the ins and outs of “mind reading”. Yet as puppies often did, Eclipse lost interest in the conversation and quickly changed the course of it, which Nayru simply went with.

“No, I don’t live in one of these houses.” Nayru smiled, locking eyes with the tiny creature, as if to see if the girl could discern where she came from within the limits of Dahlia de Mai’s territory. Nayru rarely had to ask where the others lived, she already knew. Their scents, concentrated in the places they slept, gave away those mysteries. Nayru often combed the lands, following the other’s trails, and knew where they had been, where they were going, and where they laid their heads at night. In time Eclipse would learn to do this too, although asking was just as an effective means of finding out, if the other told. “I live much further east. In a house made out of glass.” She paused, and then “Have you explored much of Dahlia on your own yet?”
