Gabriel’s body responded to the sudden and terrible change that overcame his daughter. It knew she was dangerous and unpredictable, and that her Secui form only echoed the terrible one it most remembered—Haku Soul. She was not him, though. His consciousness understood that. This did not prevent his traitor instincts from displaying aggression; his hackles rose all along his spine and his lips pulled back to show pearly fangs. No one in Inferni, not even his own mother and daughter, would be granted pardon when it came to such displays.
He would not strike her. That much he knew. That did not dismiss the fact she might come at him, and while Gabriel recognized the inherit flaws with her attacking him, it still concerned the Aquila. His feet carried him sideways, circling and keeping the distance between them even.
Then everything became clear in an instant. She was speaking of Alaine. Alaine had replaced their mother and them. Again. This had happened again because he had given way to the flesh. It seemed he had brought children to the world both times. “Your mother left me,” he said evenly, slowly as if she was a child. “She left us. You are not being replaced, Talitha—not by her children, and not by the others.” If she did not learn now, it would come back and destroy her. This Gabriel believed.
