He stayed close to Tlantli, teeth chattering slightly from the cold and from nerves. A breeze raked the quiet land and the vast expanse of territory shook with the gentle tugging of the air. The boy hesitated, looking graciously at the fresh tipped mountains in the distance.
The sharp command from his Aunt sent the boy stumbling back up to her side. He was nearly cleaving to her, the space between them only fit for a hand. It wasn’t an uncomfortable distance, though; since she was the only person he had ever had in his life.
He never knew his mother, his father, or anyone in between. Tlantli never spoke of them, whether she didn’t know or didn’t choose too, he wouldn’t know. Because of this the coyote boy grew up quiet, reserved, and permanently frightened by the outcome of life. Citlali spoke when spoken too, or not at all. He knew Tlantli liked him that way.
Something smelled very strong, unfamiliar, and caused the two coyotes to stop their walking. Citlali mimicked his Aunt’s ruthless scenting of the area. She turned to him again before claiming the correct option to do was to wait. The nephew gazed at her with dull green eyes. He watched her sit calmly, but decided to remain closely huddled behind her form. Even though he was in optime, he stood with his hands brushing the ground in a crouching position.
A woman approached quickly, scrutinizing the two in an admirable way. She spoke directly to him first, causing his heart to race until he felt nearly hidden by his Aunt. He looked at her carefully before his eyes slipped to Tlantli’s expression.
