a dog among kings with no self control

She had been provided for her entire life, of course -- in Eterne, her uncles needed only to head down the tiny market, little more than a few wagons and smaller carts pulled up to a rough semi-circle. There was enough fresh food brought there on a daily basis to sustain all of Eterne and then some; there was no need for her to have learned how to hunt. She did not know if her uncles knew, either -- for all Eris remembered, they had been as useless and incompetent with the skill as she was. Things were steadily changing for her, however, and she did not doubt that the Kimaris family was back in that distant place in their homes unchanged and immovable as stone.

The sable-shaded woman turned her head back to the water, leaning forward and squinting. The light dancing on the surface of the water made it nearly impossible to see, but as he said, she peered into the shadow she made on the water, trying to remain as still as possible. She was not typically a fidgety canine, but she was clinging to the side of a rock, and occasionally she did have to shift her footing in attempt to stay where she was -- dry and above the water. A silvery flash caught her eye, and she jerked her head toward it in response, sending the fish drifting away just as quickly as it had come into view. The hybrid frowned and stilled herself again, waiting for the creature or one of its kin to reappear.

A few long moments ticked by, and Eris kept her yellow-green eyes squinted, staring expectantly into the water. She had seen one of them, and this encouraged her -- on tenterhooks, she waited, wondering if she would be able to actually catch a fish if one happened to show up again. She had managed a rabbit on her own, but this was a different beast entirely -- there was no stalking involved here, but there was patient biding of time, which was something Eris did understand. It had been a difficult concept for her to wrap her head around at first, as instant gratification was something she was quite used to, but not getting her own way was something that had happened on a near-daily basis since she'd left Eterne.

Her eyes were drawn to lazy and slow movement as another fish drifted by her field of vision, this one bigger and fatter than the other one. She drew in a breath, forcing herself to remain still and recalling what Sirius had done before. She wasn't quite looking forward to sticking her head in the water, but there was excitement in her now, and as the creature drifted closer to the rock and just beneath her, in her shadow, she dove forward, flying off the rock and landing completely in the water. Her claws and teeth scraped against slippery fish flesh, and she snapped her jaws closed around the end of the fish as it attempted to dart away from her. She drew her head back, now thoroughly soaked from her trip in the water, and was shocked into releasing the fish as it began to thrash violently in her teeth, flopping its slimy and wet body against the side of her muzzle and face.

Surprised in to simply gaping, the hybrid watched as the injured fish swam slow and sideways. Her teeth had caused some damage to its fins and its primary method of movement disabled, it could only lazily drift toward Sirius, its back end moving in tiny twitches and jerks.
