She had not expected the fish to be quite so strong -- the sting of its slap against her flesh had surprised her, to say the least, and she watched in dismay as Sirius scooped it up easily, bashing its head against the rock. There was no more movement from the fish, and her chartreuse gaze shifted to his face, coal ears half-mast and expectant of the reprimanding she knew to be well on its way. It was delivered with perfect acerbity, as expected, and she rolled her wolf shoulders in an awkward imitation of an Optime shrug. She was already sitting in water; what did it matter if there was more of it? It was cold, certainly, but her thick coat protected her from the worst of it -- and anyway, her shoulders and mane weren't all that wet. She would dry quickly -- or so she hoped.

“I didn't think it was gonna smack me in the face,” she said, this time her voice definitely more defensive and childish than it had been before, though she did as he asked and climbed back up onto the rock. Once atop it, she began shaking herself off vigorously and with little concern for the direction of the spray, in actuality more pointedly attempting to direct the worst of it at the burnt copper wolf. Once finished, she gave herself a final shiver, her coat puffing outward in strange directions thanks to the still-clinging water. Turning with a pointed sidelong glance toward Sirius, she set herself up in much the same manner, finding herself a better foothold to begin with this time. The churning she had caused in the water was already dissipating, the silt and sediment stirred up by her graceless entrance carried off downstream.

There was less worry in her this time, knowing what to expect from the water and the fish both -- that anxious feeling of being strung across tenterhooks gone with the first strike forward into the water. There was food here and a way to provide for her children, and she wouldn't allow her own upbringing to interfere. She might not have been willing to accept blame for the way others had chosen to raise her, but she would be faulted for a refusal to learn, and thus she had taken to Sirius and his teaching rather quickly. It was an effective method, after all -- the sable-shaded hybrid did not like shame, as any self-respecting creature. His biting remarks served well as tiny barbs in her memory, sharp and biting remarks to remind her of the laughter and embarrassment (among other, far worse consequences, should she lack a pack and Larkspur to support her) that would follow failure.

The hybrid watched as a school of small fish darted by -- little more than minnows, they would provide nothing more than a mouthful consisting mostly of water, anyway. She wasn't so impatient as to so much as twitch at them; instead, her chartreuse eyes simply followed their path across her shadow, and she continued seeking their larger kin, waiting for the distinctive silver flash or the erratic, strange movement of a shadow just darker than her own. There were long, ticking minutes until one passed by, but she did not immediately strike -- instead, she waited, quelling the trembling and puppyish excitement within herself to stillness, until the fish drifted very near to her nose. With a sudden jerk of motion, she plunged her head into the water and snapped her jaws again, closing them on what might have been the fish's neck, if fishes had necks.

Drawing her head back out of the water and snorting it from her nose, she clung to it tightly this time, dragging herself backwards and setting the fish to the ground. Eris put one paw over the fish's head, the other standing on its tail, and held it there, still clutching with her jaws, determined not to lose this one. She leaned her weight forward onto her paws in to crush the fish's head in a faint mimicry of Sirius bashing its head against the rock.
