my road to hell is surely paved

The shore was an unusual place for Eris to venture; the sable-shaded hybrid generally did not meander past the borders of Anathema. She had visited Halifax just once since moving to the pack. There simply was not much reason for the hybrid to venture outside of the pack's territory. Larkspur provided just what she needed in nearly every instance -- save one. He hadn't brought Wretch back to her. The coyote hybrid did not hold it against the sable man, of course -- it was not his fault Wretch was gone, any more than it was her own fault. Eris had entertained the idea of blaming herself for the girl's disappearance, but she did not think she had been an awful mother. Three of her children had come into this world, and two were still quite alive and well, and quite with her.

She hadn't yet given up on Wretch's life, however, and the coyote woman had taken to exiting Anathema's territory, exploring the territory just surrounding it. She feared Inferni more than she did this southerly Phoenix Valley -- she knew nothing of this pack, and thus she was unafraid. There was plenty of reason to be afraid of Inferni, on the other hand, and so she had avoided them in her travels, instead keeping to the coast or the western areas of the Dampwoods. Wretch would not have continued along the mountains, or so Eris thought. Still, her search seemed to be edging toward futile -- there had been neither sight nor scent of the girl since her disappearance.

Eris would not allow desperation to overtake her, however -- this would only lead her toward despair, and this was unaffordable with two children still at home in need of her. As she meandered along the coast, she walked close to the water, the waves washing frigidly over her feet. Though the cold of winter was fading, the ocean held it resolutely, stoutly refusing to heat up with the incoming summer. Eris did not mind; the cold felt good. It awakened her, and her head lifted for the first time in a while, otherwise occupied by the padding of her feet through the water. In the distance, closer than she might have expected, a figure of a stranger made its way toward the water, leaning down and dipping something into it. Curious, the hybrid trotted forward, sharp yellow-green eyes focused on the stranger. It was a wolf -- no coyote here.

Still bold, the coyote stopped just a few yards from the woman, tossing her head once toward the orange-hued vial clutched into the woman's hand. “What you got there?” she asked, rather brusquely -- friendliness wasn't her strong point, and in such a state as she was, it was enough that Eris had even made her way toward this woman in effort to converse.
