The remains of human life were at once eerie and intensely fascinating. He would never bore of learning the ways of the strange creatures who had ruled the earth before his kind. Their ghosts were everywhere, in the strange items and customs they left behind to be adopted by canines, and in the empty dwellings that lined the residential streets of Halifax. He could never desire to live like they had — with their exorbitant luxuries, he imagined that their lives had been much less rich, and less satisfying than his. The disappearance of human beings was a mystery that he had no hope of solving, so he relented to simply appreciate the power that they had once held over the world. It was why he chose to walk the city streets, feeling insignificant among the structures built by a species much more advanced than his.
He had been watching the clouds on his way into the city, and by the time he reached a street lined with dingy houses, the sky had unleashed a torrential downpour. The warm spring raindrops made him uncomfortable, dampening his fur and soaking into his skin. Kansas lifted his satchel over his head to shield himself from the droplets and kept an eye out for a place to escape the rain. It did not take him long to find a covered porch, its stairs and railings worn ragged by the elements. He leaped up the steps and shook the excess water from his ivory fur, though it did little to dry him. Setting his satchel against the side of the house, Kansas sunk down against the door, drawing his knees towards his chest. He sharply inhaled the humid air as he gazed out at the powerful rain, momentarily lost in a trance. There was plenty of good, dense weed in his pack, which he intended to amplify the experience of returning to Halifax. But for the moment, he was content to relax and watch the rain fall.
