She had a point. Slade didn't remember asking Deirdre to share anything that was particularly personal, but she had told him quite a bit about herself. He had, too, but not nearly as much. She had a right to be curious, and what had he done? He flung a somewhat edgy reply right back after his short answer. Wasn't that a nice thing to do? While he was at it, maybe he could ask Deirdre why she lived here! Wouldn't that be absolutely brilliant? Or maybe he could blatantly reject her apology.
Slade hadn't given himself a good mental beating in a few months, but now he flung that record out the den. Worse, she was taking it lightly; somehow he wondered if, had she retaliated with a retort, he would have been less... guilty. This was a whole new level of terrible conversation, even for the normally awkward coyote.
Realizing he had been staring at the ground uncomfortably since Deirdre had given an answer, he looked up at her grey eyes and tried to make up for it. "You don't sound nosy at all. You're free to ask," he blurted, talking even more quickly than usual. "If there's ever anything you want to know about me, you can ask. Honest." As soon as he spoke he felt like driving his muzzle into the wall so nothing else would come out. Even if Deirdre wasn't the type of wolf who would take advantage of his offer, he had a bad feeling it would come back and completely embarrass him someday.
All Slade could do was glance outside, trying not to make his constant eye movements too noticeable. Suddenly it was getting rather uncomfortable in this den. It was getting lighter outside, right? It was still raining, but it would die... just like his humiliation would, if he got lucky.
