Verloren

A voice stirred the young pup, though like any child she kept her eyes firmly shut trying to sleep for just that much longer. However, when reality slipped back into her weary mind she hesitantly opened an eye to see if it there really was somebody nearby, or if exhaustion was merely playing tricks on her mind. She was overjoyed to find it was the latter. Her tail beat the ground softly both in the enthusiasm and to alert the stranger she knew of his presence. A moment later she sat back up, feeling somewhat revived. Her tail continued to wag, though she kept her head low and ears hung back as she expressed submission towards the pack wolf. Her shyness and caution was without a leg as instinct powered her to seek acceptance. But, since there was a language barrier she couldn’t outright ask, knowing he’d likely stare at her dumbfounded. Although, she had learned various English words on the boat and understood some of what the other lupine had said. “Safe,” she quietly repeated, her German accent heavy. Pondering for a moment she then attempted to further indicate her intentions and asked, “Pack?”

Her tail wagged again with the word and she found it increasingly difficult to keep a submissive stance, unable to contain the eagerness and relief she found in the stranger’s presence. If she could she’d bombard him in puppy antics until she melted into a pile of happy goo. But, she had to restrain knowing even a pup crossing territory borders could be considered offensive. Border lining complete exhaustion and starvation also helped keep her set. It was only by sheer emotional will that she was able to sit up thus far. It was melodramatic, yet true, to think how this one wolf or his superior’s decision dictated her fate. Although, such a thought wasn’t currently present in the pup’s mind, as she cheerfully looked at light-pelted wolf.
