And what did you do next?

Perhaps he came off as arrogant, but the man had never been troubled by the opinion of others. Especially not this girl. Eyes did not rise until her voice rose to draw his focus away from the sad piece of art in his pale hands. He had seen her face more than once, but they had never spoken. He rarely spoke unless he had a reason to. There was no mentioning of his injuries, and he was content. Bruises and cuts were hidden behind thick, golden fur. Her eyes belonged to spring and far away seas, but he was not easily swayed by beautiful shades alone. Was she of a rank even to address him? He found peace here, but there were too many rules that he cared nothing about.

It would be unkind to reject this shy female instantly. While the idea didn’t make him cringe, exactly, he knew he would survive her presence for a moment or two. After all, she was a part of this strange pack and learning something about her would no doubt prove useful later. The work in progress remained in his hands, for if she had not recognized it for what it was already, he figured she was not likely to learn more if it was placed in her hands. Young warriors born by sin were not supposed to be able to touch beautiful things, but no rules could restrict the flawed Prince with the empty eyes.

”Do you believe in fairy tales?” Sometimes, and only sometimes, he thought he did. Sunset eyes returned to the unfinished belt of flowers, not yet worthy to sit on any royal head. ”A girl cannot be a princess without a crown,” he added, slightly shaking his head, slowly, as if the thought alone was something unbearable as well as impossible.
