Little paw steps stomped, crunched and tripped through the foliage that lined the forest floor. Quick, whip-like floofy tail picked up dry leaves and twigs as the little body trampled through the woods. Red ears swiveled to listen to the foot steps that followed, but she was losing her pursuers fast and could only hear the littler of the two anymore. A pink tongue lolled out of the side of her mouth, folding around pearly canines. As soon as her mother promised a town was just ahead, the impish girl took off at full speed, leaving her family far behind.
It wasn't long until the girl burst from the brush and into the clearing, four paws skidding in the dirt as she lurched to a halt. Jaw fell slack and that tongue dangled, the only sound was of the air whooshing in and out of small lungs as the wolf pup labored to catch her breath. Finally she closed her mouth and swallowed despite her dry throat. She glanced behind her, hearing at least one set of steps coming for her, and then her paws started again.
Nose to the ground, the creamcicle pup sniffed a jagged line through the U-shaped district of the town of Thornbury. She had been here before, but the girl couldn't remember it.
Soon enough she found herself at a stoop. It was a curious place at the end of one of the rows of buildings, two stories high. The pup sat down and stared up, her windedness passing as she committed this place to memory. Her ears twitched but she did not bother to peer behind her to see if her mother was there. Her mother usually snuck up on her now, but her sister would never get the upper paw in a stalking match. And then a voice, far off from the woods, told her what she already knew...
“Julie!”
...her mother was still a ways behind, and she wasn't happy. Still, she cocked her head and stared at this place in wonder.
