Gray eyes bugged in surprise and she screwed up her muzzle, looking at the child like she thought it might be… ‘special’. What was she doing just standing there staring? And then after that… what the heck was she talking about? Liliya watched, astonished, as the girl then casually walked up to the pool of water and took a look in. There was a barrier here causing even more of a problem than usual; Liliya’s accent and stunted understanding of the English language, and the pup’s youthful speech impediment.
“Wada…” she mouthed the word behind the pup’s back, not trying to mock her but trying to silently repeat the sentence she said to figure it out. It wasn’t until she watched what the puppy actually did that she discerned the words that had been yelled at her.
“Oh, vater,” she said, now understanding as she walked up next to the puppy. An inky brown shape formed in the water over the girl, her elongated reflection interrupted by the gently rippling water. She looked from the reflection to the girl as though she expected to notice some difference, her eyes finally settling on the watery version of the puppy.
“That is only fool’s gold,” she offered, thinking she was looking for the golden flecked sand. Liliya had once noticed this too and hoped it was the precious metal that mingled with the dirt pebbles, but the shiny yellow in the pond’s sand was nothing more than a fraud. It was useless. “You might as well try to dig yourself a cloud vhile you are at it.”
A frog paddled past their sight line and then leaped from the pond landing near the puppy’s foot. Liliya eyed the intruder but kept talking to the girl. “I have not seen you before, poop. Vhat is your name?”
