Vesper had been flirting with the borders.
She was not suicidal, however, and she kept far enough away from the scent-markings to insure she wasn’t on the wrong side. However, even that distance—just barely in range to be able to see and smell the pack territory—was strange for the solitary coywolf. She hadn’t come this close to a pack since arriving in Nova Scotia, if the trip in the fields near Cercatori d’Arte was not to be counted. She hadn’t been able to actually see the pack lands then.
Now, however, from her vantage point on the bulging roots of a large tree, she could see the suggestions of a divide. Beyond was a pack that smelled differently than the rest—the marks had been made by canines who smelled more of coyote than wolf most of the time. It made her curious, though it also brought to mind the band of yearlings she’d joined up with in her youth.
She did not know about Inferni, and she did not know that the woods stretching into its territory was called the Forest of Nod. She only knew that she was close and able to smell coyotes as well as boar; a group had passed across the border only recently, though they’d since retreated into clan territory, rendering it useless to chase after them.
The female sighed, dropping soundlessly from the root onto the cushion of pine needles that covered the forest floor. Her large ears swiveled toward the border once more, blue eyes focusing intently for any form of movement, but after a few minutes she was disappointed. She turned, and all that could be seen of her was a flick of her tawny tail as she disappeared into the foliage.
