Time slowed down and stopped entirely before the male. Ever tried to speak, but her feeble words didn’t even register. The hybrid was panicking, he felt like was watching her die right before his very eyes. In the back of his mind he knew the children were coming, and that he needed to take her to shelter. He couldn’t imagine carrying her that far away but he knew it was what he needed to do. Whether or not Ever survived this was up to him.
The man willed himself to shift as quickly as his body would allow, but with every passing second he felt like he was wasting time. He said nothing to her, instead silently focusing on the bones elongate and crack. His mind was mush, his body wasn’t moving fast enough. He wanted to scream, but no sound came out.
Finally, finally, finally the man was on two legs, and he scooped the woman up as delicately as he could. The hybrid gave his mate a reassuring lick, and took off as fast as he could. The summer wind whipped through their fur, and despite the warmth of the morning the male shivered. He could do nothing but run until his legs gave out.
He didn’t want to look down at her just in case he saw something he didn’t want to see. He couldn’t bear to see her face contorted in pain, it made a hole deep in his chest ache. His legs were protesting but he knew he had to keep going. Finally, the house came into view and the boy let himself breathe again. Sighing, he looked down at Ever and nuzzled her pale face. We’re here, love, he said quietly, finally slowing to a halt. If he wasn’t holding the most important thing in his life he would have surely collapsed.
