The savage in man is never
quite eradicated

Ezekiel nodded shortly to Cotl’s assumption. There were traps place along the woodland, but many had been sprung by prey, and many more destroyed when the hunt for his aunt had gone on. The hybrid assumed Cotl’s work had begun again, but there was only so much one man could do. He sniffed the air rapidly, taking in the scents; the girl was moving quickly despite her wound, and Ezekiel imagined that the chase would soon wear on.

It took them several long minutes to reach the stream. Ezekiel frowned. She was using a simple, stupid tactic and one he recognized too well. The water was fast moving, and while he could see it was disturbed, tracking her beyond this would be a time-consuming task. “She’s out of our borders,” he said with a growl, straightening up. “Save your energy chasing her. She’s from the Court; I’ll see to it that her superiors own up for her actions.” There would be no satisfaction in chasing down a wounded dog; as clever as she thought she was, Ezekiel knew the politics of the packs well.
