Winter’s bite had come to the north, though there were still weeks of autumn left before the snows began falling. As a loner, Vesper would be pressed for food and competing against others for the small animals hiding away for warmth. However, since joining Inferni, her usually gaunt features had filled out to a healthy slenderness, softening her appearance even though her compact muscles were all the stronger for the nutrition. Since joining the rumored savage clan, even her personality had been mitigated, her temperament less harsh though the spark still remained. She wasn’t suddenly bouncing around on cloud nine, but she was content with where she was and no longer afraid of losing her freedom.

The Tirones became a regular patroller along the border, for her own sake even more than the clan’s most of the time. She did brush against the trees and leave marks and check to make sure that no skulls had fallen off or been stolen, and she kept her senses alert for trespassers, but she usually walked the edge of the territory to look at the neutral lands beyond more than anything else. She still loved the thought of running through lands unclaimed and being independent enough to survive out there, but while her wounds were mostly healed over, she wasn’t quite strong enough to be exploring all of Nova Scotia again.

The strong odor of a horse tugged at her attention around noon, and she abandoned the rabbit trail she’d been following to check it out. Horses were dreadful creatures, the coywolf thought, even though the ones in Inferni weren’t accompanied by giddy and stupid girls and were much more tolerable. Her eyes rolled as she thought of Leigha and her grey cob, and then she set off in the direction of the horse scent. It seemed to come from past the borders, and she wondered if one of their own herd had wandered off—but she trusted the other members to be able to handle their animals. Besides, this scent was accompanied by that of a lone luperci, one that smelled half-and-half of coyote and dog.

Inferni tolerated coyote blood, and so Vesper saw no harm in going to greet this individual—though she probably would have anyway. She loped along in her lupus form until she spotted the horse through the bushes. They seemed to be moving at a quick-enough pace, and Ves knew there would be no real time to shift into a different form, not with her lack of skill.

“Hello?” the coywolf called, coming forward instead. She remained on the edge of the borders, her blue eyes scanning the horse lazily before finding something more interesting in the shape of the woman on its back.
