plunder and blunder

The little Haskel was developing quite the god complex. One could argue that an inflated self-esteem was better than a shattered one at this age, but he would eventually learn that not everyone was willing to put up with his antics or obey the rule of his father. He’d yet to really meet anyone outside of Cour des Miracles and took it for granted that people would be nice to him because of who his father was—and because he was his father in miniature, or at least he entertained the thought. The sad fact was that he didn’t know Vigilante quite as well as he liked to brag, what with the conflict keeping the King away.

However, for now, the white male knelt to his level and agreed that he was a scary pirate. The boy wrinkled his nose—for he’d meant to convey he’d fought off a pirate, but being a scary pirate was a good thing, too! He lifted his chin and flaunted his half-curly tail over his pale golden back. “Gotta be scary, protect Kingdom,” he disclosed. He wanted to protect his family and the rest of the Court from bears and AniWayans and all other monsters out there.

Skoll smiled when the male apologized, accepting his words with a reassuring look and a wag of his tail. He knew that he was small because of his age, but he didn’t want to be thought of as helpless. If he was weak now, what would he be like when he got bigger? If you believed you were strong and could get bigger and better, you would be a powerful grownup and a good hunter. He didn’t want to be a little runt who never got better.

The white wolf questioned again why he was out here, and the boy blinked. “I—ummmm…” He looked around, dipped his body suddenly, and managed to shrug the necklace off his body. “Look fer treasure?” he offered, not wanting to admit that he’d snuck away from his babysitter. To further distract the adult from asking questions, he blurted, “You bodyguard.” At least he thought that was the right word. Of course a King needed a bodyguard to protect him!

The blonde boy thumped his tail a few times on the pavement and chirped, “Whassa name?”
