Sophie awoke confused, and completely alone. For a moment she was frightened, thinking she'd been left behind in her father's journey to the north, and then she heard Boothe's soft snoring and realized that wasn't the case at all. She wasn't alone; she just wasn't sleeping under her brother. Lifting her dainty little head and blinking around in confusion, she saw Boothe and that other one, Trigger, snoozing lightly on the other side of their small den. She felt a brief moment of fear at not finding her oldest brother anywhere in sight, but she squashed it down, wobbling carefully to her feet and clamping Bug's head between her teeth before dragging her friend outside.
The sun was high in the sky, and she blinked slowly at the clear, cloudless day ahead of her before she waddled out into a small clearing, dropping Bug and lifting her nose to the air curiously. It still smelled somewhat of her terrorizing father, and she pressed her ears briefly to her head at the thought that he might still be around somewhere. But there was no sign of anyone in the immediate area, so she circled back around to her beloved doll, planting a paw on his face and letting her tongue hang out. "Tag! Bug it!" She declared happily, and then began running around excitedly, as though the sand-filled doll would actually get up and chase her.
