The ring-furred girl was strange, that was for sure. Skoll didn’t know if all outsider children were weird or if it was just this one, but Sophie didn’t seem to know a whole lot about pack life. Had he been older, he might have understood that different environments shaped different canines, but all he really had to compare her to were his siblings in Cour des Miracles. He’d only been alive for a quarter of a year, and his world was still small.
His nose wrinkled when he realized that she didn’t really even know how to play right, but he hadn’t given up on her this far, and so he only wagged his tail harder and grinned encouragingly. She finally stretched out, wiggling and barking, which was an invitation to keep playing as far as he was concerned. He fell into a crouch, delaying his pouncing as he realized that she was pathetically small. He knew better than to hurt her.
The blonde boy settled on creeping forward, placing one paw down at a time with a little growl that was too silly to be considered scary. He reached out and batted at her folded-over ear before rolling over, as if he’d suddenly lost balance. In a more vulnerable position, he sprawled close to her and aimed little playful nips at her forepaws. It wasn’t the most exciting play session he’d ever had, but maybe he could draw her out of her shell a bit.
