The elegant dog-woman frowned when the coywolf asked for the knives, and the golden boy looked between the two of them with one paw still pinning the teacup. Soon, however, Caspa drew the knives and hoisted them effortlessly. The blades glimmered, drawing Skoll’s eye, his jaw unhinged slightly in awe before Caspa made her unexpected challenge and swooshed away, just like a ghost. His head craned at an almost painful angle to watch her until the rest of his body pivoted, and he gasped for the umpteenth time as she threw them up—one, three, five—and caught them, spinning them deftly, metal dancing in the air. It was so pretty and dangerous and it near hypnotized the child. Caspa was perfect, only Caspa could do this, only a ghost could do this—
Terra growled and stepped forward, the image shattering for only an instant before it came back together like the surface of a pool. She spoke, and his name broke him out of his trance. She plucked one of the blades from the air, and then suddenly there was a knife embedded into the ground next to him. Once the fact registered more clearly in his mind, he got to his feet hurriedly and scrambled backwards to place distance between himself and the other knives flying at him. Once the fourth knife had landed and there was a pause, his body whirled around to face the two women, his plumy tail curled uncertainly between his legs.
And then there was a blur of brown, Terra going for the last knife—which disappeared just as a spurt of blood erupted from her mouth and she fell.
Skoll stared, open horror on his young face, as his friend choked on the blade. The happy astonishment and even the adrenaline from his own flight from the knives had wiped away immediately, and then the frightened child began to wail.
