Warmer Days Ahead

Two days had passed since Saul had come and already Temeraire seemed as if he had always been a part of their lives. That the Stormbringer man had arrived with a newborn so soon after Nayru's own birthing had to be more than mere coincidence. One child lost, another gained, Nayru was sure that some force greater than herself directed the course of action. This belief gave her comfort as she sat staring at the sleeping children. At so young an age it was obvious that Temeraire was both older than Kahlo, and a not quite of the same blood. The boy was much larger than his adoptive sister though Kahlo's coyote ears were large and round. Yet for the differences between them they took to each other naturally, as newborns would, huddled up in an indistinguishable lump of eight legs and two heads.

With the two asleep and with each other for comfort Nayru took the opportunity to steal away from the den. Emerging into the January air the short, thin lady reached fingers towards the sky and felt the muscles cramped with sitting and sleeping stir once more. The Jiryu longed to run and hunt and stalk the borders, but even the small stretch she had allowed herself pained her. Her body seemed slow in healing after the birth, which had torn her open like a child's long anticipated Christmas package. Her own children had left her in tatters and the pack had done what they could to heal the lady. Stop her bleeding after the birthing, feeding her herbs to ease the discomfort and speed the healing, and still she was weak and tired.

So tired that moving only a few yards from the den worn on her. Yet Nayru had no real wish to move too far anyway. The crimson eyed lady stayed where she could glance to the den entrance, no one would enter without her knowing although she did not fear any danger within the Ichikan borders. The day was mild for winter time and Nayru settled herself on the ground, face to the sun, and exhaled slowly, awaiting the arrival of any of the many faces that came and went to and from X'ryin and Saluce's den daily, hoping that whoever passed next was carrying a fresh catch, for the lady found that, as usual, she was ravenous.
