Eye of the storm

Regner flicked his ears towards Ilusion in response to her tone, a habit that he had picked up which was roughly equivalent to a physical "fair enough" and then he responded, raising his head up as he spoke. "The Broderskab travelled a lot, but until recently we stayed on the European continent. Probably should have stayed there." Regner let out an angry snort, but he angled his head outwards to make it clear that he wasn't directing it towards Ilusion, "We tended to stay in colder areas though. Ovcharka hybrids have lots of muscle and thick fur, " Regner lifted his head even higher, stretching the muscles in his neck to reinforce this point before lowering his head again, "Built well for snow and cold."

As soon as Ilusion started to move towards Adelle Regner's eyes were fixed on her, attentive but not aggressive. The whole point of inviting her in here was that an extra body would provide more heat for Adelle, but at the same time he wasn't going to let a stranger get that close without some scrutiny. When it became obvious that Ilusion was just offering her cloak to the already thick pile keeping Adelle warm Regner lowered his head and relaxed his gaze, an approving hum reverberating through his body, followed by a simple "Thank you."

For Adelle's part she had taken a liking to the pretty stranger who spoke so nicely to her, while the puppy had no idea what Ilusion was saying, the little high speech that she knew being Danish, she could identify the tone Ilusion was using. When the coyote came close Adelle lunged forward, the little wolfdog playfully nipping and licking whatever parts of Ilusion's face she could reach. When the cloak had been placed Adelle retreated into it, visible as a rapidly circling lump under the fur.

Regner's amused chuckle was cut short at Ilusion's question, and his voice was solemn when he spoke next, "Young, just finishing her third moon. Far to young to be without her mother, but wish as I may the dead cannot raise a child. Regner growled indistinctly as he spoke, his eyes glaring a metaphorical hole into the floor. Thinking about the death of his beloved daughter always put him in a bad mood and Adelle noticed this, the lump that signified her presence stopped circling and settled next to him, her side pressing against his through the clothing.

It would be easy, Regner thought, to blame this on Ilusion. To shift his aggression onto her for no reason beyond her species, as he had done multiple times along the Inferni border. Regner was old and set in his ways, even those recently adopted still held great influence over his behaviour.

Still the thought of Ilusion's eyes when she had looked at Adelle stayed the great dog's temper. Adelle was the sole focus of Regner's life now and he could not bring himself to drive away somebody that his beloved granddaughter was fond of. With a heavy sigh he lowered his head and closed his eyes momentarily, things had been so much simpler when he was with the Broderskab, a pack of warriors at his back and, to their eyes at least, the world arrayed against them. That had been familiar ground but this, diplomacy and hunger and danger, was no situation for an old man trying to keep his granddaughter alive.
