Ithiel had some understanding of the snake's usefulness, but he offered only a nod in response, content to wait upon his horse's back for his Aquila or Optio to make their presence known. Though vultures were far more scavengers than hunters, others within Scintilla had possessed different birds -- some small, dangerously quick falcons, some eagles as massive as Zedekiah, with razor-sharp beaks and claws to match their ferocious gaze. He did not understand companionship from the animal, however, for Zede and Lystra both were beneath him. They were creatures meant to serve, and one did not form close relationships with one's servants, especially servants which might be called upon to die at any moment. He would not lament Lystra if she died in toiling for him, nor Zedekiah -- such was their purpose. It was much the same with his own death -- meaningless, so long as it was in servitude.

Ezekiel made his presence known shortly thereafter, and Ithiel's carnelian eyes regarded the man's ruddy-colored feet and no higher, despite their current disparity in height. Lystra eyed him warily and shifted her weight again, issuing a half-hearted stomp as her only protest against his presence. Ithiel, for his part, remained silent for whatever banter they needed to make. He had endured this process once; he'd seen it before -- he would see it again, no doubt. Ezekiel seemed to regard her with a queer neutrality, though Ithiel did not think it so terribly strange, for his half-brother did tend to take the impartial view, as did any good leader. Where Ezekiel succeeded, Ithiel would fail -- Inferni would not hold long beneath his own rule, he thought, no matter how many years of glue preceded his reign. He did not inspire any camaraderie in his fellow canine, and they would quickly seek some other haven, he knew.
