Wraith’s eyes widened progressively as Ezekiel spoke. She glanced from the Aquila to Vesper, wondering who Halo was. Wraith was quite certain that the Scary Lady, who had terrified her when she’d ventured out to the mansion, was Halo. Ezekiel explained that Halo, the top warrior, could no longer fulfill her role because some stupid, horrible wolves had hurt her. Wraith put the pieces together and realized that it was indeed the terrifying coyote lady from when she had been only two months old. How could she have been hurt? Wraith knew that as the Triarii, Halo was the best warrior there was. That would have been like – her father being wounded by a wolf. Of course, Hybrid had not died fighting a wolf, but a traitor coyote.

With a sudden wave of realization, Wraith saw that even the best warriors could be hurt. This made her feel very scared and cold and she wished it weren’t true. For the first time since he had died, Wraith wished her father really was alive again to protect her.

Ezekiel continued to speak about the building, and although Wraith heard everything he said, it just didn’t register. What could it mean for them then? If Inferni had fewer warriors, then – then, why wouldn’t another pack take this chance to hurt them? Wraith heard Vesper mention something about a new pack with a warrior as a leader. Wraith’s ears drooped. She latched on to that one little piece of information: the warrior-leader would destroy them all, wouldn’t she?

Wraith looked around, searching for her sister. She could see Lucilla watching, her eyes wide, from across the circle. Wraith didn’t know when Lucy had arrived, but she wondered what she was thinking. Wraith then turned to her brother with a low whine.

“Nate,” she whispered, “what’re we gonna do?” And unspoken, she thought: ‘I don’t wanna die.’
