The relationship between Hotaru and Fawkes was unusual. Fawkes and Hotaru relied on each other and supported each other in every way. Fawkes relied on Hotaru for guidance and wisdom, while Hotaru relied on him as a companion and partner in the hunt. From the moment he hatched from his egg the predatory bird was almost always by the grey wolf's side. The exceptions were few and far between, and even then he was never strayed to far. When Fawkes had first started flying with Hotaru at night, the task was nearly impossible. Over the past several months, Fawkes had honed his skill and although there were still many things he couldn't do, Fawkes was at least able to keep up with Hotaru in the darkness. By his logic, if Hotaru could travel around in a perpetual night, then he could too.
Night was a peaceful time and Hotaru loved to travel and enjoy the melodies that only appeared when the sun had set. The sea wind flowed over the cliff at varying intensities. Sometimes it was brisk and whipped her fur around. Other times is was gentle and flowed through her fur like soft fingers. When the wind died the sounds of crashing waves reached her red ears and on her other side were the songs of the forest. An owl hooted from his hidden perch and the scent of the coyote grew stronger with every step. Even as the wind began to pick up again a male's voice called out to her. Hotaru's ears swiveled on her head to catch the sound better.
The blind wolf frowned, he was underestimating her like most did. Calmly Hotaru called out to Fawkes, her soft howl beckoned him to come to her. Soft wingbeats followed by a quiet thud appeared and Hotaru bent down to pick up Fawkes who had landed on the ground in an undignified manner. His sharp talons wrapped around her forearm and she rose with the bird in place. Once Fawkes was safe in her arms she turned bravely towards the stranger. "I agree, you should consider getting yourself a guide. The night is unforgiving to those who do not respect it."
