Skoll had gotten used to playing with other puppies over the months, his littermates as well as bigger and smaller children. While the prince was straining toward becoming an adult, he still remembered well how to be a kid, and all it took for him to open his mouth and blabber on with excitement to prove he was one yet. He liked to climb and play in his new optime form, but it felt good to be on four legs, too.
Presently, the golden wolfdog lounged in the yard beyond the buildings, his tongue spilling from his jaws as he basked in the sunlight. It was as nice a day as any other this spring—not counting that terrible rainstorm he’d been caught in among the hills—and he was nearly asleep in the warmth. He would enter the adult ranks soon, but there was nothing for him to do right now, no duties or tasks, no siblings or parents to scold him. Maybe he’d patrol later, or he’d find Terra or Caspa and cause some mischief.
A thump made the boy lift his head, yellow ears perking. A smallish girl had vaulted over a wall and was making a break for—well, somewhere. He frowned and rose onto all fours, shaking his coat out and watching her silvery shape move. He remembered her somewhat, knew his mother cared for her, but he’d never really met her personally. He had too many important big friends to spend time with someone who hadn’t really introduced herself to him—but this was just curious.
“Hey!” The young Haskel began to run after her, a steady lope that showed both wolf and dog heritage. His tail waved high and curled behind him as he chased casually after her. “Hey, Euphie!” That was her name, or something near enough like it. He ran a little faster, trying to pull up alongside her.
