The other puppy froze, and Skoll had to dig his paws into the ground to keep from rushing on past her. He circled back around easily and wagged his tail at her, pleased that she’d called him Prince. Technically, that was his rank, but he knew that he was a true, true prince as well—the heir of the Dog King. It was enough to send a self-satisfied smile creeping along his muzzle; as his body and mind grew, so did his pride, his self-esteem a little more than just healthy now.
She made a remark about her name, and he lowered his ears. It sounded like a mouthful, but that was probably just because it had been when he was a kid. “D’you want me to call you Euphemia instead?” the golden boy asked, his still slowly-wagging tail encouraging her as she crept closer to him. He realized now that both of them were standing still that she was about his age; he’d thought for some reason that she was younger.
The girl sank down, her forelegs outstretched in a luxurious bow. The prince copied the posture with some excitement, although he tried to act adultlike also. He decided to make the play-bow a stretch instead, letting his toes flex and his tail curl high and proud above his back. His tongue flicked across the scar on his leathery nose as he dropped down onto his belly.
“Mostly I wanted to know where you thought you were going,” Skoll teased, although really they were free to roam anywhere in the territory. The prince liked to think that he was allowed to roam even farther, although he’d yet to tell his parents about any of his excursions. Maybe once he was ranked as a grownup, they’d let him go and visit all the different packs, no matter how far away!
