Spring
Just out of reach

I'm on my own. That single thought kept running through her head like a bird song: repetitive and relentless. What little protection Kiara once had was gone. After the loss of their leaders, Ichika had dwindled down in size till nothing was left. Then it simply broke apart. The pack had disbanded, and Kiara was left to fend for herself and her small puppies. She continued to remain inside Wentworth Valley, her den and its precious contents tied the white female to the former pack lands.

The young mother no longer dared to travel far from her den. She hunted within close proximity to the burrow and used a nearby stream to provide most of her meals. Kiara had even gone so far as to mark her own territory. The scent markings were placed in a quarter mile radius around her den. Without the safety of a pack, she had become extremely paranoid. Already a fox had met its end by her jaws when it dared to travel too close to her den.

Every day her puppies grew larger. They were a moon old and were almost completely weaned off of her milk. Feeding them and keeping them safe had become Kiara's primary concern. To make matters worse, Kohaku and Lucia were learning at fast rates and had begun to fight for dominance. Most of their tiny duels ended in a draw, at which point their mother had to separate them. Both had learned early on to stay inside the den when their mother was out hunting, but Kohaku had been pushing his luck recently. Kaira was constantly worried about their safety, especially with all of the recent developments.

It was early morning as the new mother left her den. Kohaku and Lucia were both still asleep, so she moved carefully so as not to wake them. Once clear of the tunnel, she bolted towards the nearby stream, the pain in her shoulder she completely ignored. On her way she picked at the small rodents that were scattered around the forest. It wasn't the best place to find the small meals, but she had little choice in the matter. Carefully, the arctic wolf entered the stream. There were still some remnants of ice that littered its banks, and the freezing water bit at her paws. Kiara moved carefully in the stream, her steps slow and calculated. A large fish swam by, but spun around once it noticed her presence. With a powerful leap, the young mother rocketed after her prey. She chased the fish upstream where the water flowed faster and was shallower. Once there, the fish was caught between the rocks and became easy prey for the hungry wolf. Kiara grabbed it's tail and moved back down stream along the river banks so she could enjoy her meal while still staying close to her den.
