Panic in the forest

She watched on as Grace ate at the placenta, and then moved on to help her foals. One of them, she noted, was not moving nor breathing - Skye looked down sadly at the little foal, not yet given a chance to live her life. It was a sad thing, something not taken away, but never given in the first place. She looked at the female wolf, who was now staring at her.

"Yes, I know Liliana," she said. She would have asked how she was, but she felt that now was not the time, with the birth and death of one foal and the excitement occuring.

Her hunch about one of the foals had been correct - it wasn't moving, nor would it ever move. It seemed that Grace didn't have time to be sad at the moment about it - she still had her other foal to take care of, to nourish and feed and love just as she would have the other. The female wolf still stared at the dead foal, however, seeming to be slightly in shock due to the sudden birth and death.

"It wasn't given a chance to live," Skye said sorrowfully. "But Grace will love that foal now twice as much - I'm sure it will grow to be a fine steed," she said, looking at the little foal who was now suckling its mother's milk. She would help the female wolf bury the dead one if she wished, but later - right now the mother and child needed to rest and wouldn't be moved for a little while now.
