Spring
Just out of reach

Dawn broke through the night and spilled new light into the Den. Sapphire eyes cracked open, sleeplessness making them heavy and woozy. It had been almost a week since Kiara had lost her precious son and moved her two-month-old daughter out of desperation to New Dawn. The white female turned to look at Lucia who slept nestled into her mother's fur. The pup's red back rose and fell delicately as she breathed. Lucia, unlike her mother, had been able to sleep peacefully through the night. Tucked underneath the tiny female's exposed paw was her rag doll.

The past week had been hard for the young pup. After loosing her brother, she had been forced to walk many miles on the old highway until they reached the boarder of the pack lands. There she had been introduced to luperci for the first time. It had been a strange and frightening affair for the tiny puppy, and one she had taken in stride. Kiara gently licked her daughter's head, noticing that Lucia smelled strongly of her new pack, and stood with a great yawn. Kiara looked around the main den where the many wolves of New Dawn slept. With a hunter's grace, she exited the underground chasm and emerged into the bright morning light where the air smelled less of female's in heat.

The morning was cool and refreshing, spring had yet to let go of it's grasp on the world. The mother's blue eyes took in the light with little trouble as she moved silently through the foothills. The white female didn't travel far from the den for fear of anything happening to Lucia. It was an old habit that refused to disappear despite the fact that the wolves of New Dawn were very good around her. There were even two older puppies for her to play with. Even so, Kiara couldn't let go of her paranoid fear for loosing Lucia like she lost Anna and Kohaku. The scarred female stared out across the pack territory, wondering if she would ever see her son again.

Kiara stopped her morning hike not even a quarter mile away from the Den. There, she spotted a patch of recently disturbed dirt. After their arrival at New Dawn, Kiara had buried her only belongings. They were of little use in the "feral" pack and were safe from any harm due to the deer fur that had been carefully wrapped around them. Feeling nostalgic for some reason, the arctic female sat down next to the upturned earth and let her mind wander through her memories.
