Vesper toyed with the end of the femur, the dancing bone-shadow thrown on the wall by the lantern’s wavering light. It was a rarely-lit thing, for she fumbled often with matches, and she didn’t need it to read by because she didn’t read. While she knew a foggy day might grant the oil lantern its use, she kept it more as a luxury on the days she could afford to beggar a match from someone. Still, the flickering light gave the long cavern an atmosphere she somewhat liked, and she would enjoy gnawing on her bone in cozy privacy.

Lupus jaws worked the edge of the bone, and her cornflower eyes shut. She had spent much of her time active lately: picking up on extra patrols, expanding her low speech with the ravens, and mingling with the other Infernians more than usual. And she enjoyed the clan, despite the awkwardness with her sister, the teasing from Helotes, and the feeling that everyone knew she was moon-eyed over someone.

However, the Centurion felt it was almost necessary to be social. She felt like she was fitting an empty space, covering the hole but not the dark hollow behind. It wasn’t until she was alone with her thoughts that she knew the reason for the feeling: the near-absence of the Aquila. Ever since the Boreas war, Ezekiel had not been quite the same, and Vesper knew she could not pick up on the slack forever.

She frowned, lips falling against the bone, and gnawed more fiercely until it cracked and splintered in her jaws. Maybe she would talk to Stark about it; in his broken speech, he offered good advice. What he would say about Inferni’s leadership, however, she did not know.

Vesper sighed then lifted her head, the femur falling on her slender legs as her ear swiveled suddenly toward the deer-flap entrance of the cavern.
