He did not stray far from her again, after his trip to Cercatori d'Arte for the bird. It was just a chicken that he had decided to set up at the stables, and had told Giselle he would show her the hen when she was no longer bed-ridden and able to travel. They might even take the children when they were old enough. He was down the hall in the library, reading a storybook and dog earring stories he thought sons and daughters would like to hear. He hoped his children would love books as much as he and Giselle did. Silvano flipped a page and smiled at the faded colorful picture of a human girl with her father behind her. Cinderella was a sweet story, good for a little girl, a young princess. Silvano knew he wanted a daughter, certainly. A young girl he could spoil rotten and make her know she his world. Sons would be his princes, heirs to his legacy, if he ever got himself one.
Another page turned as the man heard his beloved sing out. Nothing but her sweet voice echoed down the hall, vague and sweet. He titled his head in peace, weary in the wait for her labor to start. Silvano paused as he heard her voice trail off, but then resumed the easy read and marking off the next story. But then his hackles rose as she called out his name, pain falling off her tongue. He rose, book falling from his lap to the floor with a clack. But he ignored it, rushing from the makeshift library to their large room.
Emerald peered at the woman on the floor by the window and he cried out in worry. "Giselle!" he exclaimed, rushing to her side even as she clutched at her belly. "What's wrong?" he asked, stupidly. It had to be the labor, especially this late into the pregnancy. He delicately pulled her to her feet and led her to the bed as carefully as he could.
