The man’s prayers had been answered before, but not quite so violently and literally.
Thundering hoof-beats and crashing twigs announced the approach of something large and fast. A roan horse appeared at the crest of a hill for just a moment, sporting a white luperci on its back, before it threw its rider and charged down toward them. Yelping in surprise, the Turk instinctively opened his arms to catch Wilson, who dug his claws into his shirt and nudged his head into his chest for protection. He held the cat tightly, helpless as the paint mare’s lead dropped, freeing her.
Levent watched in horror as the other horse flew past, turning around and rearing back on her hind legs. Mai flattened her ears and let out a scream of rage, but she held her ground long enough for the roan’s owner to leap between them, grabbing the animal’s head. Lev took that time to reach for Mai’s halter, jerking it downward and telling her to relax, his horse’s speech accented with a wolfish growl. She resisted briefly, shaking her head and straining against his grip, but snorted at last, blue eyes glaring at the other mare.
“Tanrı aşkına!” the d’Artisan swore breathlessly, looking at the white hybrid. His lips wrinkled back, but he noted that the stranger was young and genuinely shocked. He shook his head, muttered another oath, and mewed softly to check that his friend was okay; Wilson answered in a shaky affirmative. He then scowled and looked at the hybrid with vestiges of shock still on his face.
“That’s pretty serious for her to have never done it before, erkek çocuk. What, did you just get her?” That was all that made sense; he had recently gotten the bay sabino himself, and so he didn’t know all of her vices and virtues just yet. He did know that, while somewhat bad-tempered, the mare didn’t go out of her way to attack others unless it was to nip a luperci she just didn’t like bothering her. At least, he hadn’t seen any fights break out near the d’Arte stables.
