The world was dangerous.

Others might get caught up in that fact, letting it drive them into cracks where they’d live and die in darkness and fear. Still others responded to danger by becoming dangerous themselves, turning into dark husks that turned a cold shoulder on others in need and spilling blood before theirs could be spilled.

Skoll was neither kind. He wanted to make himself dangerous, but he was driven to protect those who had already been hurt by the cruelty out there. His aged and innocent mother had been brutally attacked, as well as the huntsman of their pack. His eyes had been opened to what the world really was outside of storybooks, and his priorities had been set straight. While a few weeks ago he’d been content with moodily stomping around the Kingdom and avoiding his family, he was ashamed of what he’d been like and wanted to set things right. He needed to become a soldier defending Cour des Miracles, a protector of the weak, like the heroes in the storybooks. He didn’t think he could distinguish all the evil in the world, but he would damn well try to keep the lands around his home safe.

The creamy-yellow wolfdog had adopted his bulky secui form for this patrol, one that took him deep into Seabreeze Brink and now bumped him up close to the Cercatori d’Arte borders. He’d noted the smell of the boundary when he first approached it, but with his mind focused on rooting out whatever dangers could be lurking in the thick woodlands, he didn’t realize just how close he had come to the lands. He lurked in the vicinage of the artisan pack, his footfalls heavy and his green eyes darkly searching for a threat.
