They were not a very large party, but Salvia had little desire to travel en mass to Freetown. Between them they would have enough—she was entirely confident in those who had come. The two men were both strong and silent, which meant obedience, and Salvia’s previous poor estimations of both Siv and Isabella had been lost. Both had unique talents that made them worthy, but more than that, they were smart women. Smart enough for her to consider them clever, something she respected with a wary eye.

There was another member to their party, the scared girl that Siv was taking as part of her slave-training process. Salvia didn’t care. She saw little value in it but respected the witch-woman’s ways enough to give her a loose leash. Another final glance was passed to each member of this party, and satisfied, she opened her mouth. “We will travel until dark. There are some provisions for us, but I would suggest keeping an eye out for any easy meals we might see. Also watch for poachers—there’s a large number of us, so I don’t think they would attack, but desperate men are foolish. Try not to kill them outright,” she added, smiling cruelly. “We might turn a profit for them.”

She shifted atop Nacht, who snorted and pawed at the ground. “We are all responsible for one another; I do not want anything happening to compromise this trip.” Her eyes trailed towards her brother, recalling how (under another man’s watch) they had lost one slave and crippled another. She did not speak of it, however, and turned her horse north. With a flick of the wrist she signaled for the group to follow and began leading them towards the border. The blonde wolf rode easily, with her head high and body loose. This was a test, of course, but she felt little apprehension about the matter.
