I rarely write above 200 words, but that's usually because I have lots of threads to do and I'd rather make short posts to clear my load faster. But usually when I write longer, it's because I ran away with my words.
As for receiving. It depends, if it's a thread that's not one of my favourites, I prefer shorter posts (not really sure why?), but if it's my fav thread I prefer something large to read and fangirl over. But I'm really not fussed all in all tbh.
