Life and How to Live It

Element arched his back, enjoying being petted immensely by the dog. He hadn't been petted before, not much - most canines he met had spoken to him, and he had spoken back. He made no effort to speak now, for he did not need to - he was content at the moment, thinking nothing of the future or past.

He was distracted when he heard the sounds of pages flipping. Turning around to see what the sound was, he saw a book, with scratches on it - not quite the uniform print of a library book, but the scrawl of handwriting from Luperci and humans, before they died out. He cocked his head, rubbing his sides against the man as he read it; it seemed to be a conversation of sorts between two Luperci, and one explained that he could not hear, or speak.

It explained why he had noticed Element so late. Element turned away from the man, scratching away his paws in the sand. Finally, he turned so that the man could see what he etched in the dirt; it read, "My name is Element."
