You couldn't pretend they died without having received prior permission from the character's player -- that'd be considered powerplay. ^^ In such situations, it's most common to assume the character simply disappeared for reasons unknown.

As for the heart icon -- yes, that'd go away. You could always get a new mate, and therefore a new heart icon, though.
