But in the end, you don't get another shot

Hemming had only taken a few slow steps backwards when he heard the thing coming closer, its heavy paws scrunching branches and compressing the already dense earth. His backwards pace quickened, and Dagrun's feathers puffed up a little more. The wolf hoped that she wouldn't cry out an alarm as she had when the snake was coming near, underestimating its danger, but trusted that her fear was similar to, as well as silent as his. She, however, didn't have the worry of being killed.

As the great beast, appearing to be following him, stuck his nose around the tree trunk, Hemming paused for a moment, as if a lack of movement would prevent the bear from being able to sense that he was there. His hand holding the sharp rock lifted up to a tree to support himself just a little, his head and body feeling light and ready to collapse.

The bear was now fully in front of him, making a noise that made Hemming's blood pulse so fast that it might just come spurting out of the thin capillaries in his ears. He felt as if he was outside of his body, now, his hands and legs feeling like clumsy extensions of a flawed tool. Just barely, he could feel Dagrun's talons clenching and releasing the skin on the top of his head, and the gentle pressure of her soft underbelly as she pressed himself against his skull. Why, even in the most threatening moments, she did not simply fly away was beyond Hemming.

He remembered the spear that was clenched tightly in his right hand, and he lifted it a little. The wolf wasn't sure if the beast would actually attack or if it was just a show of dominance, and the uncertainty made him extremely nervous. Eyes flitting back and forth from a wide view of the bear to its blood red eyes, Hemming started to take trepid steps back again, the spear ready over his shoulder. Should the bear move forward again, he wasn't sure what he would do. What response would take over him: fight, or flight?
