ooc: Mild PP, let me know if I should change.

There was smoke everywhere and the burning smell of wood was so thick, Brooklyn was choking on it. Where was her mother? Where was Mati? Part of the roof seemed about to collapse and she immediately stood back, watching in fascination and fear. Naniko's voice, from so far away, seemed to pull her back and she looked with wide eyes at the white female standing there. They were all in danger, something was screaming at her. Her mind, maybe? Like waking from a dream, Brooklyn tore her eyes from the blaze and stared at her mother, before Mati's voice broke the silence. What had Naniko done? Trust Mati to show her maturity, instead of staring at the fire like a lunatic. Brooklyn heard her mother's voice, angry and the word 'destroyed' seemed to put everything into clearer perspective.

Like being doused with cold water, she shook herself, her blue eyes no longer vacant. They glittered with alertness and she felt the blood rush back into her body, and there she was, alive, young and running once more towards her mother, the roar of the fire dimming in her mind. "Momma, we got to get away from here! It's dangerous!" She needed to scream over the noise, but that was the least of her worries. The grip on Naniko's arm was strong, confident, and already she was pulling away, silently beckoning for her sister's help. "We can find a place to stay, where it's safe. Don't be angry with Mati, she just wants to help. We both want to. Come on Momma, let's get away from here." Brooklyn was afraid, but she would never let that fear consume her. She and Mati had come here to save their mother, no matter what.
