Xeris was pleased when her teeth found the other's flesh but knew she couldn't let her guard down. She was suddenly struck by a jarring blow to the face, right along the base of her snout. Any higher and the coyote's jaws would have put out both of Xeris' eyes. She let out a small yelp of pain, frightened that the other had come so close to blinding her. Thinking about this Xeris realized that her opponent was missing one eye; perhaps if Xeris could strike on that side she'd have a better chance of hitting the coyote's weak spot...

She shouldn't have stayed in thought for so long; suddenly the coyote was charging at her. In a flash of quick thinking Xeris reared backward and slashed both her front paws, claws extended, at the opponent's shoulder, hoping that she'd hit. But she didn't get the chance to see, as the force of the coyote's impact against her combined with her sudden change of position caused her to fall to the ground, lying on her side for a moment before scrambling to her feet rather clumsily.

The rain continued to fall heavily, drenching both combatants. Blood from Xeris' wounded face was washed downward; it almost appeared that bright red tears were falling down her face. Nonetheless, she knew she had to stay strong and fight, at least until she could distract her opponent long enough to escape...
