     He could feel their stinking breath on his heels. Still, he kept running. All parts of his body had tightened in on themselves, and there was incredible terror pulsing through his body. For all of this, it was not enough—the noise and confusion blinded him. Suddenly, a massive wolf—no, dog—broke the grass in front of him. Both legs hit the ground hard, sending pain rocketing up his bones, but he avoided the teeth narrowly. The brute’s shoulder hit his own and the wolf let out a loud yelp, staggered, and fell.
