Fresh Start and Lonely Heart

For a few minutes – mind you, it felt like hours for the lonely pup – she laid there, her golden yellow eyes barely open. The smell of a wolf coming was evident, but as she tried to look around in the direction of it, everything was too blurry. She decided that doing nothing was going to be the best, if she could gather her strength just for a little while… and so she fell asleep, her furry lips twitching into a smile. Even with her tiny body cold as the icy water she’d consumed earlier, her stomach completely empty of food and her heart lonely and aching for a new beginning with a new Pack, she was happy in her sleep.

It wasn’t a very deep sleep though, and before she knew it, she was startled awake. Now she could smell him very, very clearly. Without even looking up, she knew he was a large wolf, maybe bigger than her Father or Uncle had been. She knew that he was coming closer, that he would soon see her. No! He had already seen her, that was why he was making his way here, wasn’t it? Talamar shut her eyes as tight as she could; trying to emit a little growl. She really wanted to show him she wasn’t scared, that she would fight him to the death. Both were never going to happen.

She was very scared and she could never defeat him, not unless she got years of training by the best and grew a few more feet so that she could match his height. She heard him howling, he was too close. Was he calling for help? Why would he do that though, to defeat her? Was there a slim chance he could take her in as his own? Maybe he didn’t like Pups though; maybe he wouldn’t necessarily take her in… Maybe whoever he was calling would, but what if she didn’t like Pups either? No, they were going to kill her and eat her for dinner later.

All those thoughts washed away when the larger Wolf came closer and then actually decided to lie beside the small, fragile little thing. All of the young wolf’s fears vanished, and although she would normally be more careful, right now she didn’t care that a stranger was so close, that at any point, he could eat her whole. Are you okay? His voice made her tail twitch a little bit, and the smile on her lips returned a little. She cuddled up further inside him, enjoying all the body warmth her Mother would have given her if she hadn’t gone for that walk on her own that day.

Was she alright though? To be honest, Talamar thought that was a funny question, “Cold…eat…sad.” She was still quite young, it was a given she hadn’t developed proper speech yet. It was a little strange how she’d managed to walk five miles south in six days, all on her own too. Maybe she had her Father’s bravery and strength in her, who knows. If the Wolves didn’t eat her, maybe she could find out if she was like her Father or not. If she was, then she would make a very good Wolf in the future, a perfect wolf to join a Pack.

She would make a Pack proud one day. She would make her parents proud of her as well, she promised herself that.
