The noise woke Gabriel from a hazy half-sleep. He had been dreaming, that much he knew, but the dream faded like a ghost in the fog. In that same daze he rose to his feet, drawn to the call. Anselm’s tone was not one of urgency, but it still demanded his attention. So, with the twilight memory of his dream nipping at his heels, Gabriel trotted out into the cool night air. Mechanically, his feet carried him through the tall grass and towards the source of the call. During this time, his brain reconnected with the circuits sleep had pulled from him, and when he reached the mansion he was entirely coherent.
Immediately the scent of smoke caught his attention. It was familiar, one he associated with Rurik, and the hybrid paused in the half-light. Someone was certainly hitting the green nearby. The other scents came next; his mother, Anselm, his brother, Halo (unsurprising, considering she lived here), Mason, and Hybrid. They were all fresh, and Gabriel, like the ghost of the master’s dog long passed, followed them. Up the steps, down long hallways, he soon found a door ajar, with Hybrid blocking the way. Almost instantly a pang of embarrassment ran through him, seeing his mother as smashed as she was, thrusting a bottle into his Hydra’s face. Of course, she was not alone—the whole party was full of belligerents. Gabriel’s instant reaction was to frown, like a father catching his kids acting up, not amused that his sleep had been disturbed for such a reason.
