The child was very well-spoken for her age, providing adequate answers when spoken to. Something about her seemed a little off though; her body was sending mixed signals, ranging from flattened ears to sly grins. Not to mention, eye contact was nonexistent. Her crystalline blue eyes were glued to the ground, with no intention of seeing anything else but white nothingness. This was not normal puppy behaviour. Children were normally honest little creatures, never failing to demonstrate warmth and sincerity. As children, Emwe and Conor had never displayed troublesome demeanors, even though they would’ve had every reason to. The puppy’s answer further fuelled her perplexity when a response escaped her little maw; apparently, she didn’t have a mother.

Looking back on the behavior she’d displayed as a child, abandoning her very own offspring sounded like something Svara would’ve done. But over a year had gone by since the Acer had last seen the little pest; change was possible, but unlikely. Certain people were incapable of improving their lifestyle, and Svara struck her as one of those unwilling to help themselves. How many personality traits could mother and daughter share? The Dahlian knew that a replica of Svara would not be tolerated, but who was she to judge a child without sufficient proof? The Rosen’s children were the opposite of their father. If Conor and Emwe had turned out okay in spite of their messed up lineage, then perhaps there was still hope for the sable puppy.

With Haku’s dominion came quite a few disadvantages. He hadn’t officially thrown her down Dahlia’s hierarchy pyramid, but he’d taken away every bit of authority she had once possessed. Accepting newcomers, puppy or not, was a procedure that now required his approval. The Rosen never lurked too far away; she knew it by the intensity of his scent, and the snow crunching under his menacing weight. She couldn’t help but stiffen momentarily as he brushed past her and settled between the child and her. Alexey instinctively moved over, adopting a different angle where the male’s behind would not obstruct her view. “Haven’t gotten around to asking her that yet. She apparently doesn’t have a mother. But don’t you think she looks a little familiar?”
