In Character

The silver-furred hybrid did not need to wonder why Gabriel was upset. His morality was far stronger than her own, which was weak and watery, subject to volatile change whenever it suited the situation best. Perhaps morality was an improper word for the murky and vague sense of right and wrong governing Kaena Lykoi—immorality might suit it better. It disturbed her to think that now Gabriel would be even more upset with her, and that showed on her face in a wild and fearful eye, panic rising in her chest. What could she do to protect herself? The silver-furred coyote knew she could not survive if Gabriel decided to throw her out on her ass. She was no longer young, and certainly, if she was removed from the clan, Vieira would stay, pampered by Rikka and Gabriel in place of their very mother. A stab of wild jealousy shot through her, and it was only the other canine's continued speech, drawing the silver-furred canine's attention immediately, a shot of fear more potent than anything slicing through her at the Quintus's words. The cut? She'd almost forgotten about that, but there it was—a reddish, rust-colored scab on the side of her face, a crescent vaguely in the shape of one of Kaena's teeth.

When Vieira spoke again, the hybrid released a breath she did not even known she was holding back. The Centurion's single eye appeared rather relieved, the anger having been quickly evaporated and replaced by fear, and then the fear destroyed by the sense of relief that flooded her upon realizing that Vieira had not told the truth about that injury. The silver-furred coyote knew that had not been right—it still wasn't, and she still had yet to make it better. Slumping down, appearing utterly drained and burned in a vast and wild swing from the energetic and practically aflame coyote that had exploded in the doorway moments before, the silver-furred hybrid looked at Vieira with defeat in her single eye. "It was an accident," she said feebly, knowing that was not true. She had intended to strike Vieira—that was certain. "I'm sorry," she added, sounding more assured of herself in that second sentence than she had in the first.
