Once Hybrid received Gabriel's approval, he returned to the bush to gather more sticks and trees. He continued to dig in the same area he had started, but the ground was hard and cold. This was not easy. If it were the summertime, then he could have done this with a lot less effort. Of course, if it were the summer, there would not have been any snow covering the strange surface and he never would have ventured on to it in the first place! Hybrid was starting to really dislike the winter. If only it could just be the summer all year around. That would be far more pleasant.

Hybrid continued digging, and slowly but surely, found more shrubs and branches to bring back to Gabriel. It took him a while, since most of it was hiding under a light layer of snow, and then buried beneath even more snow. But eventually Hybrid had created some sort of a walkway from Gabriel to the edge of the bank. It wasn't a red carpet, but it would have to do. Lastly, Hybrid dragged out a long branch he'd found and put aside. He pushed it to the edge of the bank, and then slowly lowered it down. He grabbed the top of the tree with his paws and hunkered down so he could hold the tree down, and so Gabriel could use it as a makeshift ladder.

"Okay Gabriel, come on up," he said at last, once he was certain this would work. There was no way Hybrid would ever leave his Aquila stranded on the strange surface; he did not know what it was, and would not leave anything to chance. He adjusted his grip on the tree so he had a better hold, then pressed his weight against it, making sure it did not wiggle away from him.
