Mew felt something new where she stood. She was in control; she was smelling this coyote, looking at this coyote, but her mind was at ease. It was not afraid, it was not burning with anger that threatened to consume her wits and have her crash into another being in a flurry of teeth and claws and death. She studied this creature that was a representative of everything she had spent years hating and blaming for her misery, and now she was calm as the lake of of her birth pack on a bright summer's day. For the first time she paid attention to the details of this person, this type of person, and found that she did not look as different from herself than she had thought she would. Their images were twisted in her mind. Then again, Mew could see that there was more to this one than just coyote; it was a hybrid. This was not surprising, as she felt as if the hybrids were almost more common than the pure ones. Her thoughts wandered to her half-brother Jefferson, and she smiled inside her mind. She was changing for the better, and she was impressed with herself.

The words that exited the stranger's mouth rippled the calm surface of Mew's mind. She looked like you. Mew stood silent a moment, part in shock, part in bewilderment. Again, she was in a strange situation, just as with Jefferson. The white-pelted femme shifted a leg uncomfortably; her fingers fidgeted; her eyes glanced to the snowy ground and back up again at this female. She seemed young enough. Had Colibri... and without telling anyone? Did Haku know of this one as well? Why on earth would her mother have done this to them, to stay there, to reproduce and never tell? In all her life Mew had never heard anyone sing that song but her mother — not even Ceres, and no other wolfess that looked like herself. One eyebrow moved on its own accord and for a moment her face displayed the dissension inside her. Speechless she registered how her calm was slipping, slipping into chaos again. This chaos that she had banished, that she did not welcome. She spoke now, and she had seen the single tear of this creature in front of her. She had heard the quiver in her voice, and now it was present in her own. "What is your mother's name?" She did not demand, she pleaded. It had to be someone else. Maybe Colibri had learned it from someone else, elsewhere. Maybe this hybrid was from somewhere far away and had just wandered into Inferni. Maybe her mother had found the song in a book, like Mew found songs in books. Her white fingers were suddenly biting with cold and she clasped them together both for comfort and for heat. This coyote had to be wrong. Mew might have a hybrid half-sibling, but she did not have family in Inferni. She couldn't. It was not an option.
