The silver-furred woman watched as the other canine rather feebly made her way into the little alcove, her movements low and seemingly wracked with pain. The hybrid woman frowned, her anger drained away completely now—this was no time to be angry with the tawny coyote. Kaena wished she could do more for Vieira; she waited until the other canine was completely laid back down again, and she stuck her head into into the alcove. It was not particularly tight; the hybrid would have had enough room to turn around, but it was rather dim, and she was glad she had given Viei a candle.

Comparing her treatment of Vieira to the way her prior owners had seemed to treat her always made Kae feel a little better; the hybrid woman knew that the other canines who had called themselves owner of Vieira prior to her had not been nice, not by a long shot. What she remembered of Astaroth had been a charming, conniving sort—she had seen his anger shine through at some points. There was something inherently wrong with Astaroth, something Kaena could not quite put her finger on at first. It had become apparent later, only fully when this other daughter of the Kimaris man had showed up on her borders. She wondered how many other children Astaroth might have raised; from her recollection he was not the youngest man when she'd killed him. He had years to sire other creatures like Vieira, but she did not think he had exerted the effort into them as he had this one. They were thrown to the wayside, perhaps forgotten as Samael, Razekiel, and Ahemait had been.

The coyote woman faced Vieira, her scarred head twisted toward the other coyote to peer at her, half of a smile, almost awkward, on Kaena's face. "Do you need anything?" It was an odd question to ask the Quintus, considering that was not the way things usually worked. Still, Kaena was certainly willing to care for the other canine—if Viei simply wanted to rest the hybrid might go and bother Jedidiah about coming to tend to her wounds. He had professed some skill in the medicinal area, or so Kaena recalled. They had so many new faces it was difficult to tell one from the next. In time, though, the Centurion was certain they would prove their worth. It was either that or perish, these days.
