In many ways, this reminded Kaena of laying close in a warm den with her children; she recalled those times fondly, and she often missed that. Vieira was much older than a puppy, but she was not so different—she required protection and direction, and there was something to blossom in her, still, or so Kaena thought. Maybe with enough time she might be able to shatter the hold Astaroth had over her mind; she had done so with Kairo, though it was true he had never controlled her to the extent that Astaroth seemed to have controlled Vieira. She did not know how much faith she had in ghosts and devils and demons; it would seem to her that Astaroth had cursed her with his dying breath, though perhaps that had been a concoction of her own head, too. Anymore, Kaena's mind simply engaged in coquetry with psychosis and she could hardly tell the difference between reality and what her own head had created.

“Laugh back at them,” she suggested. Maybe this had never occurred to Vieira—she had never heard the paler canine laugh, at least not within her own earshot. “Who still breathes?” she said derisively, thinking of the dead canines—it was cruel for them to plague this canine still. As Vieira drew back the hybrid woman whined her protest softly, shoving herself forward again, though she was gentle and careful not to rustle the other canine too much. “What have you done wrong, though?” she asked, pressing the other canine. “When... when you overslept, you didn't do anything wrong,” she said, distress creeping into her tone. Her coal ears were folded back into her shaggy silver mane. “I overreacted,” she admitted, sighing softly. This was the truth; anymore, the hybrid was having difficulty with the notion that she owned the other canine, and she desired for Vieira to take more initiative and try to have more freedom.
